You may not realize this, but Luton Airport first opened all the way back in 1938. Although it had very humble beginnings (as did most airports which have been around this long), it has really made a name for itself over the years. Since its early days, the airport has successfully grown to a hub that not only moves more than ten million passengers a year, but also offers travel to sixty different destinations through the use of fifteen different carriers.
Because Luton airport handles such a large number of passengers each year, it should come as no surprise that the airport employs over eight thousand people. In addition to moving over ten million passengers each year, the airport is also responsible for moving over twenty-five thousand tonnes of air cargo each year.
While Luton airport is in good shape these days (especially when you take into account the impact that the downturn in the global economy is having on the entire travel industry), its history has not been without some troubles. Between 1972 and 1991, the airport went through a handful of major problems, but fortunately for their sake (and the sake of passengers), a new management team began turning around these problems in 1992.
One of the major initiatives that this management team did was to focus on the comfort of passengers. As a result, not only has the airport seen the improvement and addition of terminal space, but you can also count on being able to easily obtain things like a rental car, which we all know play a major role in the overall convenience of a successful trip.
